Allah's words resonate once again...

by Nadia Khan

Many people protested far and wide against U.S attacks on Iraq, only to find their voices fall on deaf ears. It must have discouraged them beyond repair and many would have cried at their sheer uselessness. For others, their helplessness taunts them even today since they could not prevent their loved ones from falling victim to such havoc. Still others would have promised themselves not to waste their time in raising voices against lost causes in future.
But the best among them are those who did not care about whether their actions produced any results or not. They fulfilled their duty by protesting for what they felt was right and left the rest to Allah (swt).

However, such news reports as Ex inspector: Bush lied about Iraqi WMD, Blix a 'coward', Yahoo news, July 15 2003, must have made all of these people happy. These reports prove that what they thought and felt was right was in fact proven right in the long run. The feeling that they stood up for a cause that was "just" satisfies them immensely. May be, they do not feel as helpless anymore. May be their failure to convince the authorities this time challenges them to succeed next time around Inshallah.

It appears that the members of NJ Solidarity at Rutgers University share the same school of thought. They are hosting a national student conference on Palestine Solidarity Movement to oppose Israel's occupation of Palestine and to defend the rights of Palestinians to resist the Israeli occupation. These members are least concerned about the resistance their efforts are being met with, in supporting a cause that they feel is just. But according to Rutgers President, Richard McCormick's message, dated July 15 2003, the view that these members hold are "abhorrent". Now abhorrent is a strong word but it certainly is not new. Just a few months ago, the protests against Iraqi war were also termed "abhorrent". It is very ironic however, that when everything was said and done, U.S was the one who was abhorred the most all over the world. Many countries, including India, have refused to send peacekeeping troops to Iraq despite U.S's incessant requests and today U.S is standing all alone.

Through this example alone, the beautiful words of Holy Quran seem to reverberate once more.
"Let there be no compulsion in religion. Truth stands out clear from Error : whosover rejects evil and believes in Allah hath grasped the most trustworthy hand-hold that never breaks. And Allah heareth and knoweth all things " (2:256)
This verse echoes today everywhere and takes on a new life once more. It calls us to do everything we can to support all the causes that are just and to condemn all those that are unjust. It asks us to have faith in Allah completely without getting discouraged by the resistance we confront, no matter how viscous. And finally it assures that even if our efforts are not proved fruitful at first, the truth does emerge crystal clear at last.

May Allah give us the strengh to immortalize this Quranic verse by our actions also so that it reverberates not only through time and space but through our existences as well. Ameen

Imaam Maalik (rahimahullaah) said, ‘The later part of this ummah will not be rectified except by that which rectified its earliest part’.

The Prophet (sallallaahu ’alayhi wasallam) said: "The nations will soon gather up and call upon each other to gather up against you just as the diners call upon each other to the dining plate." Someone asked: 'Is it because of our little numbers at that time?' The Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) said: "Certainly not, in fact, you would be numerous, but you would be like the foam of the ocean. And certainly Allaah would remove the fear of you from the hearts of your enemies, and He would certainly cast weakness into your hearts." Someone asked: 'What is this weakness?' He (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) replied: "Love for the worldly life and hatred for death." [Related by Aboo Daawood (no. 4297) and in al-Mishkaat (3/1475).]

This is the statement of the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu ’alayhiwa sallam):"If you indulge in ’eenah transactions when trading and you start to hold on to the tails of cattle and you are satisfied to concentrate only upon farming and you have abandoned Jihaad in the Cause of Allaah, Allaah will cast a humiliation upon you which would never be lifted from you until you return to your Religion."
[Related by Aboo Daawood][‘Eenah refers to illegal transactions that involve a type of interest (Ribaa])
