A Progressing Ummah Vs A Depressing Ummah

by Bint Abdul Khaliq

Some like to call this a progressing Ummah, but I think we should call it a depressing Ummah. With the amount of unhappiness, melancholy and insecurities going around,we just have no time anymore to worry about things that matter…

Like why we were created for instance. What is our purpose in life? Our Goals? Aims? Ambitions? We are too locked up in our own world of self pity and dejection to ponder on these things. Yet the answer to all our problems lies in them.shaitaan has gotten the upper hand once again. Can we imagine his glee?Take away their hope in life, their enthusiasm for their deen, their connection to their Creator-then what easy catches they shall be!

And so the seconds tick away..

We could have used those very seconds to build up our connection with our Creator, Allah Ta’ala. We could have used them to move one step ahead in fulfilling our purpose of creation.

But we don’t see that happening. We have this flame of Iman burning inside us but we fail to use it as a torch to guide us along this dark and frightening pathway. We have the answers right here with us but we cannot see it. Everything has been included in our perfect religion. Nothing has been left out. The answers are most certainly with us.

Do we have the Tawakkul that our Creator can help us? As Muslims our answer will be yes-definitely. That is very easy to say,but do we believe it truly in our hearts? If we did then why would we turn to everyone else but Him? We are prepared to pay for advice,medicines,gadgets-anything-to take away our fears, our worries, our stress.Yet all these things will only work, can only work, if Allah wills them to.All power belongs only to Him.Everything works under His command.

Then there’s the question of WHAT we are worrying about. We need to really sit down and ponder. Is worth it? ALLAH is listening to my thoughts right now, will HE be pleased with them? From what we think and worry about-grow our actions. Our actions determine our success or failure. A true Mu’mins worry will be revolving around the pleasure of Our Rabb. We need to review each of our worries to see if it falls into this category. Does a Mu’min have time for unnecessary worldly qualms? Grudges? Iinsecuritie? No he does not.He knows his purpose in life and lives to fulfill it.

More and more Muslims are commiting suicide today. It’s a scary fact. They gave up hope.Something which Allah Ta’ala gives us every reason not to do so. Allah in His Grandeur and Beneficence is always there for those who are sincere. He loves us more than our own mothers. There is no reason to lose hope.By losing hope,we are falling in the clutches of shaitaan, who is waiting for that second to pull us down. It is only with Hope in Allah and steadfastness and zeal for our Deen that we can combat our enemy. Allah says that he is to His servants as they think of Him.

It is up to us.Do we want to change our lives or do we want to stay chained in our shackles of depression that we have imprisoned ourselves in. How do we unlock these chains? It’s Simple. Follow the Qur’aan and Sunnah as it ought to be followed . It almost sounds too simple, but Wallahi if we do this, we will be free.We will be happy. We will be content. That’s what we all want,so let us take the step make the effort. Then whatever comes in our way-we will be able to deal with it. Problems, stress and tribulations will never go away.We are being tested in this world remember. What makes the difference is our Attitude...

And what better attitude to look up to,than that of our Beloved Nabi (SAWS).Mercy,Sabr,Courage,Humility,Generosity,Taqwa-any good quality you can name-he had it.He was The best of mankind yet what tremendously trying times he had to undergo! He had to deal with sadness, challenges and tests like no-one has ever experienced. Yet with what charisma he dealt with each of them, can only leave us speechless in admiration. The Qur’an has directed us to this:

“Certainly you have in the Messenger of Allah an excellent exemplar for him who hopes in Allah and the latter day and remembers Allah much.” (033.021)

Our beloved Nabi (SAWS) is our perfect example. What we need to do now is to live as he lived.Eat as he ate. Talk he talked. Behave as he behaved. Step for step we need to follow the path that he has left for us. And then we will never get lost in this dark and frightening place. It is not hard, but it requires effort. We need to find out HOW the Prophet (SAWS) behaved so we need to study the Sunnah. Then we need to implement the Sunnah in our lives.Little by little, step by step-and most certainly we will be on the road to success.Look at the zeal that the Sahaabah (RA) had for Islam and Life in general, and they were certainly an embodiment of the Sunnah in every way.Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him.

Allah has not made life hard for us. It is we who complicate matters. And if we agree to submit to Allah in every facet of our life, we will love our life. We will inspire others. We will be beacons of light in a dark and evil society. We will love whatever we do,because it will be done for Allah’s love. With this kind of Iman kindling inside us and which such intensity to benefit mankind…

We will truly be a Progressing Ummah.

Insha Allah.

Asalaam Aleikum Warahmatullah Wabarakatu,

This is so true. Allah has created every human being with the capacity to reach excellence in faith. Some do not excercise this at all and choose to waste all that Allah has given them buy being atheists or polytheist. Some, who are Muslim, do not use their already built foundation to increase their Eman and become succesful in the hereafter.

"Do we have the Tawakkul that our Creator can help us? As Muslims our answer will be yes-definitely. That is very easy to say,but do we believe it truly in our hearts? This reminds me of the story of the Messenger Ibrahim (may peace and blessings be upon him) when they were about to throw him into the raging fire. Gabriel came down to him offering him his help only to get the reply that the only help he is waiting for is from Allah subhanna wa taala. That is extreme trust in Allah and Eman. All of the prophets and those that made miracles did so because they had an EXTREME tawakul in Allah and Eman.

May Allah grant us further and further growth in our Eman and Tawakul in Him.

MashaAllah, that was beautiful.

Imagine, subhaanAllah, that we ALL are hardwired with the components needed to achieve excellence. We're always complaining about our lives, society, the world, history, and on and on...
If we would just make use of these forgotten faculties (which can only happen by turning to the Qur'an, and cultivating within ourselves its teachings), just imagine what an Ummah of Excellence would accomplish.
Weakness cannot be among our traits, we have to strive and strive towards excellence, for only then will the way to success be cleared by the will of Allah ta'ala.

"May Allah grant us further and further growth in our Eman and Tawakul in Him."
Ameen.
